<Meeting of 12 Artists, Life, and Somewhere Between Music and Contemporary Art>
By Curator Gu Yong, Kim
When we think about the range of art, the media types that come to mind are painting and
music. These two media, painting and music, are positioned on the opposite end ideologically
as a visual art and an aural art, showing even a bit of contrast. But on the face of “beauty”, they
share an ultimate goal and they appear to be interacting with each other.
Moments of connections between painting and music existed and were quite easily found even
through the art history in a painting on some pottery from 480 B.C. where a musician who plays
an ancient Greek wind instrument called an Auloswas portrayed, similarly to contemporary
artists like painter Claude Monet or musician Claude Debussy who reflected their artistic
inspiration drawn from consistent interaction with their paintings and musical identity.
Moments of connection between painting and music existed and were easy to find in art history
as well. For example, there’s a scene on 480 BCE pottery depicting a musician playing an
ancient Greek wind instrument called an “Aulos” .
Another example is two artists like painter Claude Monet and musician Claude Debussy. They
were found to draw artistic inspiration from continual friendship. Futhermore, they developed
their painting and musical identities. Their story was perfectly reflected in their art works and
they impressed many people.
Living in a globalized world thanks to the development of mass media and technology, the
connection between these two contemporary art medias when considering ‘beauty’ has come
faster.
Inspired by a wide range of musical areas from classic to pop music, methods for artistic
expression started getting more and more diversified into painting, sculpting, installation art,
and graphic-based visual art. This contemporary art affects music in return, recreating a new
musical realm.
This exhibition with 11 contemporary artists is based in the Chungcheongnam-Do, displaying
how they expressed their experiences of the thrill they felt from music using the visual tool of
painting.
Melody brought in by musical instruments is interpreted into paintings through composition
of various materials and colors, and rhythm and harmony are approached by the artist’s
own personal form of expression. Sometimes conflicted, these two different types of art are
connected via the “beauty.” Through various art works, they wanted to emphasize the similarity
within our lives to show that we’re all connected and harmonized with one another.
Masterpieces by the artists Maureen Kaegi and Gerhard Himmer from Vienna, Austria are
exhibited together, making them more dynamic
Lastly, we’re to ask about those glorious days that everyone has had(or will have) like the
climax in the music in this <meeting of 11 Artists, Life, and Somewhere Between Music and
Contemporary
