DEEP DIVE:

      Broxburn Family Forum

At Broxburn Family Centre, we recently hosted a Family Forum designed to centre the voices
of families in shaping the future of our work — ensuring that what we do is not only for the

      community, but with them.

Using a coaching-style structure, we explored three key questions: “What is our why?”, “What
works well?”, and “Even better if…”. Small group discussions created space for honest, open
conversations, and we used inclusive tools to support participation from those less
comfortable speaking out. Childcare was provided to remove barriers, and the informal
setting — with tea, snacks, and time to connect — helped everyone feel at ease.
Families shared that their “why” for engaging with our services is rooted in connection,
inclusion, and wellbeing. They spoke about the importance of meeting others, feeling less
isolated, and accessing experiences they wouldn’t otherwise have — all of which help build
confidence and reduce barriers in their lives.

When asked what we do well, the feedback was rich and affirming. Families highlighted the
warmth, friendliness, and consistency of our staff, describing them as nurturing, organised,
and non-judgemental. They appreciated the variety of activities on offer, the way children
are given choices and a voice, and the safe, inclusive spaces we create. Many spoke about
how our approach helps them feel supported, respected, and part of something that truly

      values them.

Looking ahead, families shared ideas to strengthen our work even further. They asked for
more community events — especially around Christmas, when financial pressures are high
      — and more opportunities to participate in fundraising activities. They also highlighted the
need for better public access to information about our services, noting that people who lack
confidence often won’t reach out unless it’s made easier and more visible. Supporting
families to build life skills was another key theme, with a desire for more learning
opportunities woven into what we offer.

      This forum was a powerful reminder that co-design isn’t a one-off event — it’s a way of
working. By listening deeply and acting on what we hear, we continue to build services that
reflect the real needs, strengths, and aspirations of the families we serve.
