DEEP DIVE:
Sand Tray Therapy at The Dale Hub
After the heartbreaking loss of his baby sister, L’s mum wanted to make sure he had the
support he needed to cope with such a big and confusing experience. L, who is in
Primary 1, doesn't talk about how he is feeling and finds it difficult to share his emotions.
To gently support L in expressing his feelings, we introduced sand tray therapy as a safe
and creative space where he could explore his emotions through play. L immediately
connected with the animals in the sand, often choosing different sizes to represent his
family: a daddy elephant, a mummy elephant, and so on.
Many of L’s stories in the sand involved the animal family being separated, with baby
animals hiding from danger. Sometimes, larger animals would appear as “baddies,” and
L would invite the adult in the room to be the hero. An animal who would rescue the
babies and bring the family back together. These moments were powerful, allowing L to
process complex emotions in a way that felt safe and empowering.
Without even realising it, L was working through his grief and fears. Sand tray therapy
gave him a voice when words were hard to find, and helped him build the confidence to
connect with others again.
Now, L is a part of our P1–3 group where he has formed lots of friendships and loves to
come each week. Sand tray therapy was a gentle, non-invasive way for L to begin to
understand his emotions.
