Medical Coverage
Tele-Medicine vs Urgent Care Center vs Emergency Room
Non-emergent use of the emergency room is not covered by our benefit plans.
While the emergency room can help care for any medical situation, it costs an average of
three times more than a visit to an urgent care center. In a non-life-threatening situation,
you can most likely be treated at an urgent care center.
If you have a true emergency, go to your nearest emergency room or call 911.
Tele-Medicine / Virtual Visit:
Tele-medicine allows you to contact your own doctor or health care professional to
evaluate, diagnose and treat you and your family by using telecommunications technology
such as cell phone, computer and tablet. This is also available for mental health services.
Your regular office visit copays will apply to these virtual visits.
Urgent Care Centers:
Urgent care centers handle non-life-threatening situations. Many are staffed with doctors
and nurses who have access to x-rays and labs right onsite. Most urgent care centers are
open late and on weekends and holidays. Visit an urgent care center for these common
conditions:
• Flu and Cold • Cuts and severe scrapes
• Coughs and sore throat • Broken bones
• High fevers • Minor injuries and burns
• Vomiting, diarrhea, stomach
pain
Emergency Rooms:
Emergency rooms are meant for TRUE medical emergencies. They can handle trauma,
surgical procedures and other life-threatening situations. Most hospitals have an
emergency room that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Visit an emergency
room if you are experiencing:
• Allergic reactions to food, • Continuous bleeding • Weakness or pain in a leg or
animal or bug bites • Severe shortness of breath arm
• Broken bones (severe) • Deep Wounds • Head injuries
• Chest Pain • Constant Vomiting • Unconsciousness
Remember choosing Tele-medicine, Teladoc or an Urgent Care Venter over the ER can save
you hours of time and money.
