The "Garden Check- list" is filled with tips and tricks for local gar- deners who wish to keep their greenery, flowers and herbs looking beau- tiful all year long.
For this week and as the month of October begins, it is recommend- ed to pick a bouquet of herbs in the early morn- ing to retain flavor. Keep them in a vase and use them all week.
Tasks for early Octo- ber also include moni- toring soil moisture af- ter rain and add water if needed, especially for
trees and shrubs. Remember to reno-
vate cool-season lawns – remove thatch and aer- ate as well as hand pick snails and slugs daily or use bait.
Avoid baits that con- tain metaldehyde as they are toxic to all ver- tebrates.
When pruning, re- member to divide and then cut back perenni- als.
When fertilizing it's important to not feed citrus and other frost- tender plants.
When planting fall planting continues; An- nuals: stock (Matthiola),
forget-me-not (Myo- sotis), Iceland poppy (Papaver nudicaule), pansy, violets. Fruits and vegetables: Swiss chard, turnips, snow peas, plant from seed. Perennials- lupine (Lu- pinus), plant from seed. Trees, shrubs, vines: sa- go palm (Cycas), Ceano- thus maritimus ‘Valley Violet’, magnolia, myr- tle (Myrtus), flowering cherry (Prunus), oak (Quercus).
Enjoy now - annuals and perennials: dian- thus, aster (fall-bloom- ing), Mexican blue sage (Salvia leucantha), pan- sy (Viola). Bulbs, corms,
tubers: spider lily (Lyco- ris), Sternbergia lutea.
Trees, shrubs, vines: Texas ranger (Leuco- phyllum), sweet orange (Osmanthus), cape plumbago, snowberry (Symphoricarpos).
Fruits and vegeta- bles: apples, bok choy, cantaloupe, persimmon, snap peas, tomatoes.
Fall color: golden- rain tree (Koelreuteria). Things to think about — use organic mulch around perma- nent plants, and add or- ganic matter into soil to prepare beds for spring
planting.

Staff report
There soon will be a game arcade in down- town Sanger.
The arcade owner, Jose Gonzalez — who was granted a minor conditional use permit by the planning commis- sion at its Sept. 26 meet- ing — said the coin oper- ated game machines are already in place at 1411 7th St., near the corner of 7th and N streets, and the next step is to get a business license and open the doors to the public, maybe some- time this week.
Gonzalez said the arcade is targeting youngsters and will be available for birthday parties. Food vending machines will also be available.
He said he hasn't de- cided on the hours of operation, but the con- ditional use permit will allow him to open as early as 9 a.m. and to stay open as late as 11 p.m.
