“The 1950 Valley Championship Sanger High baseball team, which was enshrined in the Fresno County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, will headline the second class to be inducted into the Sanger High School Athletic Hall of Fame,” said high school athletic director Brian Penner, chairperson of the hall of fame committee.
The others to be inducted at a ceremo- ny next May 4 at the community center will be Ron Blackwood, Dave Dodson, Willie Garcia, Cole Herron, Chuck Shi- dan, Roy Tanimoto, Ted Torosian, Chris Wallin and Cindy Weibert.
“The committee decided to stick with coaches and athletes for the first class of 20 inductees. But from now on, up
to 10 inductees may come from any of five categories; athlete, team, alumnus/ alumna, coach and contributor and every nominee is going to stay on the list for selection consideration for five years,” said Penner.
“The committee started working on se- lecting the inductees for the second class soon after our first induction ceremony
in May of this year. We had quite a few nominations and it took a lot of discussion and several ballots to narrow the list to the final 10. The 1950 baseball team was already in the Fresno County Athletic Hall of Fame, so that seemed like the logical place to start,” said Penner.
The 1950 Apaches beat a Visalia High baseball team, 9-8, for the Valley Champi- onship. Richard “Swede” Johnson drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth and Charles Greer was the winning pitcher.
Ron Blackwood’s many contributions to Sanger High athletics include keeping detailed football, basketball and track and field statistics from the 50s to the pres- ent, researching and reporting Apache sports history and doing public address announcing at football and basketball games and track and field meets from the 70s.
The three coaches to be inducted are Sanger High legends: Dave Dodson, Chuck Shidan and Roy Tanimoto.
Dave Dodson coached track and field for 49 years and won five Valley cham- pionships. In 2002 the high school track

I think a lot of folks, especially seniors in the com- munity, like to come in and have a hot meal and start to celebrate the holidays. They get to do that with our Rotary members and members of our high school version of a Rotary club, the Sanger High School Interact Club,” said Tarascou.

Late vote counting, ac- cording to a Nov. 16 update, hasn't made much difference in the results as far as city council and school board candidates and the school bond issue.
Melissa Hurtado's lead has
grown over incumbent Andy Vidak in the 14th state senate district.
The biggest change is tak- ing place in California's 21st congressional district where late counting results show TJ Cox closing the gap on David Valadao. The margin, as of the Nov. 16 update, was 50.9% for Valadao and 49.1%
abstaining, a budget amendment that would allow more than $30,000 from Measure S to be used to buy a patient gurney for the fire department.
Melissa Hurtado, Humberto Garza and Daniel Martinez voted to approve both budget amendments.
