Longtime city employee announces retirement
The View From Here
My fa- vorite can- dy of all time is the York Pep- permint
Patty.
I have
them al-
most daily.
They’re
small and can satisfy my sweet tooth almost instant- ly. Across the street from our Reedley Exponent of- fice is Sweet Destinations a beautiful candy store that I frequent almost daily.
The afternoon of Oct. 27 was no different. I walked over to Sweet Destinations and picked up my 4 for $1 peppermints and then pro- ceeded to walk to Reedley City Hall. I was going to meet with Sylvia Plata. For the past 30 years, Sylvia has served the city of Reedley as the city clerk and execu- tive assistant to the city manager.
I tried to interview Syl- via in her office but quick- ly learned her office was a hub of excitement. People coming and going talking city business inside Nicole Zieba’s office.
“Tonight for example," she said. "We have a couple of presentations, we need to be on top and make sure the mayor is on top of what’s going on. We tell him how the meetings will be going, this one has a public hear- ing, this one doesn’t.”
“While I am the ears and eyes for the city manager on things," she continued. "Obviously, also I take all the direction from the city manager, but then I also have the council that I re- port to."

“Thank you for calling dial-a-ride how may I help you?,” Plata said with a laugh. “I started with the city of Reedley thirty years ago as a dispatcher for the transit.”
Plata said since then she worked her way to where she is today and she has enjoyed every minute of it.
“It’s funny because people will ask me, how much I get paid, and I”ll respond I have no idea, I get it direct depos- ited,” she said. “And people will then ask, how do you not know that? I say because I come to work and I enjoy my job.”
Plata, an Orange Cove na- tive and one of nine children said she began working al-
