New London man faces arson charges in hay stack fires
MVT Staff Report
Tulare County District At- torney's Office on Oct. 20 for- mally charged a New London man with two counts of arson in the Oct. 10 burning of a hay stack that contained political signs supporting President Donald Trump and Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Tulare, at an inter- section south of Dinuba.
Adan Aguilar, 24, was ar- rested by Tulare County Sher- iff's Office detectives on unre-
lated charges following a brief pursuit in Traver on Oct. 12. Aguilar had been identified by detectives as a possible suspect for the Oct. 10 fire. Two weeks earlier, a similar haystack with campaign signs had been destroyed by an ar- son fire in the area of Avenue 384 and Road 80. Detectives believe the campaign signs were the motive for the Oct. 10 fire.
District Attorney Tim Ward announced that Aguilar

was being charged with arson dur- ing a state of emer- gency, arson of property, vandalism causing more than $400 of damage, and
committed while on bail in two separate cases.
The DA's office said Agui- lar currently has four addi- tional open criminal cases: fel- ony child abuse, violation of a court order, criminal threats and felony evading. He was on bail for the child abuse and criminal threats cases.
In addition, Aguilar had a prior "strike" on his record from 2001 for a second-degree murder in Nevada.
"This type of conduct will
not be tolerated," Ward said of the arson fire in a news re- lease. "We are ardent support- ers of free speech but as I have said before, when that speech becomes action and that action is illegal, the protections of the First Amendment are no lon- ger sacrosanct."
Aguilar could face 21 years in prison of convicted of the arson and related charges. He was being held without bail in the Tulare County Sheriff's Office Pre-Trial Facility.

Maintenance activ- ity in September fo- cused on mechanical weed removal from ditch banks and check structures along with plowing of small ditch- es with top widths about 15 feet or less. District’s weed remov-

As for plowing ac- tivity, District General Manager Chad Wegley noted that over 10 miles of ditches were plowed in the past three weeks, which is a record.
In 2017, the District was busy setting a re- cord for the longest wa- ter run, 216 days, in the last half century, which pushed maintenance activity — sediment removal from Traver Canal — off until 2018.
side of El Monte along that stretch has been semi-vacant for a while.
“Annexation on the north side of El Monte will make the area more attractive for develop- ment of the east side of town as a whole. I hope that this action of ours acts as a catalyst towards achieving that goal.”

Thirty-three-year-old Jose Luis Garcia Jr. of Parlier was ar- rested on suspicion of possession of stolen property during the op- eration.
Jose Garza, Parlier police chief, said funding for the pro- gram was provided by a grant from the California Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) through the department’s Grant Assis- tance Program.
