Wreaths for Veterans removal
Volunteers with the Reedley High School Leo Club, In- teract Club, 4-H Club and other individual volunteers turned out on Jan. 8 to remove the roughly 1,800 wreaths at Reedley Cemetery that were on display over the Christmas/New Year's holiday as part of the Reedley Wreaths for Veterans event.
ABOVE: Wreaths were laid out to dry inside the Reed- ley Armory building that will be closing next month. The wreaths will be bagged on Saturday, Jan. 15, and placed into a new storage location provided by the city.
RIGHT: Wreaths were stacked on seating areas at the cemetery before being trucked to the Reedley Armory.

with 201 and 202. The latter two draft plans attracted the greatest scrutiny.
One of the public com- menters, Victor Ruiz, ques- tioned the layout on the east side and whether that region would get proper represen- tation. Another comment stated that no member of the current council lives on the east side of the city, and that Public 101 provides the best option for representation.
When both live and video commenters questioned the "fingers" from District 3 into adjoining districts in Maps 201 and 202, Tilton said the criterion of equal population can throw off the numbers, and that census blocks must be used to ensure that all four districts have nearly equal population. He said there's "nothing there to pro- tect incumbency."
Just two council members were physically present at the meeting; Mayor Eli On- tiveros and District 4 repre- sentative Michael Montelon- go. Both Esmeralda Hurtado
(District 1) and Mayor Pro Tem Daniel Martinez (Dis- trict 3) participated via Zoom while District 2 representa- tive Humberto Garza was absent because of illness.
In council comments on the maps issue, Hurtado requested that the maps be listed on the agenda and said that more work needs to be done, and asked Tilton if there would be any com- munity workshops before April. Martinez initially asked Tilton about the fin- gers from District 3 in both Plans 201 and 202.
Montelongo said that the public still had time for one more public comment period on the issue, and urged them to come to the next meeting. Ontiveros said "this is the be- ginning, not the final" when it came to the issue. The re- districting process must be completed by April 27.
It was the first council meeting for Ontiveros since his arrest at his home for alleged domestic violence on Dec. 21. He calmly lis- tened to critical comments during the general public comment period.

Fruit Avenue in Fresno. Dur- ing that search, detectives found more fraudulent and stolen items, and proceeded to arrest 40-year-old Latara Pat- ton on multiple felony charges.
A posted sticker on the community mailbox at West Kip Patrick Avenue advised residents to contact the post office for more information on their mail.

Sierra Kings Health Care District, originally called Si- erra Kings Hospital District, was established in 1962. In 2022, the district commemo- rates its 60th anniversary of providing healthcare ser- vices to Reedley, Parlier, and surrounding communities by taking a stroll down memory lane.
The district has a rich his- tory. Two years after begin- ning operation, the district celebrated a groundbreak-
ing for the new hospital in 1964. Doors to the hospital that currently resides at 372 West Cypress Ave., opened on April 15, 1965.
A broad array of health services became more read- ily available to rural commu- nities in Southeast Fresno. However, it was not until 1977 that the Emergency Room was open on nights and weekends, addressing unmet healthcare needs when physi- cian offices were closed.
Absent hospital services provided by the district, locals
were forced to travel miles into Fresno and surrounding areas for care. To address this unmet need, over time the district grew in capacity to save locals long commutes for healthcare services.
Some highlights:
• In 1982, the hospital ex- panded services to include clinical laboratory, radiology, fluoroscopy, and ultrasounds.
• In 1999, the hospital in- creased OBGYN and Birth- ing Center capacity to ac- commodate up to 12 deliver- ies at once.
• In 2006, voters approved Measure E for $20M to ac- commodate growing health- care demands including updates to medical technol- ogy, reduction of emergency room overcrowding, and de- velopment of the children and adult health centers. The district purchased its first CT and MRI scanners.
• In 2011, the district en- tered into a lease agreement with Adventist Health to save the hospital and jobs of over
