He chronicled decades of Dinubans both in picture and word.
Bob embraced Dinuba and Dinuba honored him with many honors and awards. In 1968
he was named Junior Citizen of the Year, in 2004 he was Grand Marshal of the annual Raisin Harvest Festival parade, and the Dinuba Sentinel was named Large Business of the Year in 2008. While Bob was co-publisher of the Dinuba Sentinel, the newspaper won numerous awards for journalism. In his later years he was widely recognized as an expert on the history of Dinuba, and he was frequently sought after for his knowledge on this subject. He published a series of articles on the town’s history based on a careful review of old editions of the Sentinel that are likely to remain the definitive history of the city.
Bob was born on April 14, 1929 in San Diego, California. His parents were Thomas Wrightson Raison and Margarita Higgins Raison. Bob’s father was a physician in the US Navy and as a child Bob moved often and lived in Brooklyn, Great Lakes Naval Base, Charleston, South Carolina, Vallejo, Coronado Island, and Long Beach.
In 1947 Bob graduated from Palo Alto High School and enrolled in the University of California, Berkeley. As a freshman at Cal, Bob met Diane Locke of Dinuba. Although Diane transferred to Stanford University after her freshman year, their paths crossed again. They married in 1951. Immediately upon graduating from Cal, Bob became an officer in the US Navy. He served as a Communications Officer during the Korean War. His last posting was on the island of Guam where Diane was able to join him. Following his Navy service, in 1955, Bob and Diane flew from Guam to Hong Kong where they boarded a Dutch freighter ship and spent the next six weeks traveling from Hong Kong to various ports such as Singapore and Port Said, Egypt, ultimately disembarking in Rotterdam, Germany. They then traveled throughout western Europe before sailing from England to New York and then driving across the country, returning to California.
Diane’s grandparents, JR and Gertrude Locke and her parents, Bill and Vivienne Locke, then- owners of the Dinuba Sentinel, offered Bob a job while he considered career options. Bob quickly took to the life of a newspaperman and continued in the role for 55 years. He held positions as printer, photographer, Assistant Editor, Editor, and ultimately, Co-Publisher along with Diane.
Bob realized Dinuba was where he wanted to settle and raise his family and he set about establishing deep and lasting roots with Dinuba and its citizens. After deciding to make Dinuba home, son Charles Louis (Chuck) was born followed by daughter Margo three years later. Bob loved spending time with his family, especially extended summer vacations spent traveling to National Parks, museums, historical sights, and isolated campgrounds. As the years passed, he took great pride in watching both Chuck and Margo graduate from Stanford University then Chuck from medical school and Margo from law school.
Bob was a member of the Dinuba Rotary Club and had many years of perfect attendance. He managed to accomplish this by attending a weekly Rotary meeting once a week regardless of where he might be traveling. He attended Rotary around the United States and the World, in Fairbanks, the Canadian Arctic, Italy, Austria, and Hawaii. He attended Rotary in Melbourne, Australia while visiting his exchange student daughter Denise Quinton Harrington, in England while visiting Margo’s exchange student host parents, and in Malsch, Germany while visiting friends of the Sister City Program, including Claws Tosche, former Dinuba High School exchange student.
Bob took up snow skiing, both downhill and cross country at age 42 and skied into his 70s, usually in Yosemite. He spent many weekends hiking and fishing in Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park. Bob never lost his desire to see the world and was a lifelong student of history.
In recent years Bob enjoyed reminiscing about all the Dinuba news events he covered over the years and frequently said he had lived a “fabulous life.” He had an enduring fondness for Dinuba. He missed Diane who passed away in 2018. Bob is survived by son, Chuck, Chuck’s partner, Christine Whelan; daughter, Margo; son-in-law, Geoffrey Hill; and grandsons, Carlos and Marshall.
A graveside service will be held at Smith Mountain Cemetery at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 10 and a reception at 10:00 a.m. at the Alta District Historical Society located at
289 South K Street. All are welcome. Per Smith Mountain Cemetery regulations, social distancing and face masks are required for all who attend the graveside service.
