Pirates season over, IHS playoff Friday
Reedley High finishes 3-7 after loss to Sunnyside
Staff Report
The Reedley High School Pirates didn't have the answer defensively for Sunnyside High School's read option of- fense, and as a result their football season came to an end.
The visiting Wildcats (3-7, 3-2 league), struck for a de- flating touchdown late in the first half, derailing any Reed- ley momentum to take a two- touchdown lead into halftime. The Pirates (3-7, 1-4) were never able to recover, getting outscored 22-0 in the second half and falling, 43-7, on Se- nior Night.
Sunnyside will compete in the Division 2 section playoffs on Friday, Nov. 2, at Hanford High in a 7 p.m. kickoff. Reed- ley will not participate in post- season play.
The Pirates were limited to 185 total yards, but were still in striking range late in the second quarter when Jairo Aguilar — one of 13 seniors honored before the

Water polo teams begin postseason
Staff Report
The Reedley High Pirate girls were in postseason play- off form for their Central Sec- tion Division 3 opener Oct. 25 against the Sierra Chieftains.
The No. 2 seed Pirates (32- 4-1), methodically dispatched their 15th-seeded opponents in three sets at RHS gym. Scores were 25-16, 25-18 and 25-17.
That advanced Reedley to a quarterfinal matchup on Oct. 30 against No. 7 seed Madera South, which won in four sets against Highland on Oct. 25. Results of the Reed- ley-Madera South match were unavailable at press time.
Coach Ken Tatami said it was nice for his Pirates team to get back on the court after a week layoff.
"Coming in, we knew that we would be challenged in every match despite the number two seeding, he said. "Teams are very dangerous this time of year and we need to be prepared to battle every round.
Tatami said Sierra was no exception, as the Chieftains came in with a scheme to try

Reedley High School's water polo teams began their postseason playoff schedules on Oct. 31, with the boys at home in a Divi- sion 3 matchup and the girls traveling for their Division 2 opener.
Results of the matches were unavailable at press time.
The Pirate boys (16-12) were seeded fourth out of 15 schools competing in the playoffs, and hosted No. 13 seed Sierra (18-11) at the RHS swim complex. Reed- ley closed out regular season play with a 9-3 win at Sun- nyside on Oct. 25.
The three teams seeded ahead of Reedley in Divi. 3 were Edison, Hanford and Bakersfield Christian. If the Pirates won their opener, they would play again Satur- day, Nov. 3, at home against the winner of No. 5 Exeter
and No. 12 Yosemite. Reedley's girls (17-6)
were seeded 10th out of 15 teams competing in Divi- sion 2, and drew an Oct. 30 first round matchup at No. 7 Selma. The winner of the game would advance to play the winner of No. 15 Sunny- side and No. 2 Madera. That would likely be the Coyotes in a Saturday, Nov. 3, match- up in Madera.
Porterville High is the number one seed in Divi- sion 2. Semifinal round is on Wednesday, Nov. 7, with section finals scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10, at sites to be determined.

If you want to watch the 2018-19 edition of the Reedley College Tiger men’s basket- ball team play at home, you will have to wait until 2019.
Head Coach T.J. Jennings’ squad plays its entire pre-con- ference schedule on the road before opening Central Valley Conference action at home on Thursday, Jan. 3, against the Porterville College Pirates.
The new season begins on Tuesday, Nov. 6, in a 7 p.m. road matchup with the Modesto Junior College Pi- rates, a former conference rival.
“It is hard to get teams to come to Reedley,” said Jen- nings, who added that you
almost have to offer teams to make the trip and the Tigers don’t really have anything to offer.
The Tigers only have two returnees on the roster, at this writing. “We are facing a little bit of adversity,” said the fifth-year head coach. “We were hoping it was going to be three. There is a possibil- ity that one of the would be sophomores (who the coach did not identify) to come back at the break but he has to take care of some things. We really want to make sure that he is in a position academically.”
Right now, the veterans are Cole Taber (Hanford) and Ruben Parks (Edison, Fresno),

Last season, the Reedley College women’s basketball team got off to a hot start be- fore cooling off.
This season, the Lady Ti- gers hope to start off hot and stay that way.
The new season begins on Tuesday, Nov. 6, in a 5 p.m. contest at Modesto Junior College. The RC men face the Pirates at 7 p.m. in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader. Two days later, the RC women play their first home game, a 5 p.m. battle with the Hartnell College
Panthers.
In 2017-18, Reedley start-
ed with a 5-1 record before finishing 13-13 overall and 4-8
in Central Valley Conference action, good for fifth place. Topping the list of five return- ees from that squad is 5-foot, 6-inch guard I’man Conley (Edison, Fresno), who led RC in scoring at 15.5 points per game. She was also third on the team in rebounds.
Zavia Barlow (5’6”, Wash- ington Union) was next on the team at 12.3 points per game.
Other veterans include Jelani Williford (Stockton), Stephanie Cervantes (Dinuba) and Kristy Berry (Minarets), who along with Verenice Alco- cer (Lindsay), who are on the women’s volleyball roster un- til their season ends on Nov. 9.
