COUNCIL

"What provisions are there to protect me and my 27 employees?" he asked the council.
"You guys are protecting what's here and I think that's where your biggest concern is going to be at. But the companies that are out there, we have to look at it, smell it, deal with it and so do all of our employees," Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said his business and other surrounding businesses should have been contacted sooner.
Jennifer Gonzalez, co-owner of Custom Wood Products, said there were more meetings when her business was initially being developed when compared to Genezen's.
"We had more meetings with your previous administration and the council than you did for this business and this has a heck of a lot more impact on what's going to happen in here crime-wise than what our business is," she said.
Elisa Stewart, spokesperson for Genezen, said the business she represents is not only concerned about the safety of their facility and product but of surrounding businesses.

City celebrates Christmas with dinner, toy giveaway
Nearly 400 toys were handed out to children in Parlier as part of the city's Christmas toy giveaway on Dec. 22. The toy giveaway was part of the city's annual holiday dinner. Although the toy giveaway was a last minute thing, council members were satisfied with the result. In the past, the city and YCA hosted a joint Christmas event every year, targeting families with a dinner and children with a toy giveaway. Volunteers for the event included the Parlier Lions Club, Parlier High School Leo Club, Parlier Police, Cal Fire and city staff.

"We're hopeful that we won't have to rely on local law enforcement, but we certainly anticipate there will be times when that's necessary," Stewart added. "Like anyone else, we may need to call the police if something terrible happens. So I won't tell you we won't need the resources Parlier offers but we hope we can contribute to Parlier as well.
Escobar said that although the city "probably didn't do enough to notify the neighbors and the surrounding businesses," council members did discuss many of the concerns that were brought up.
"That was still a concern that we had that we discussed

internally about existing businesses in the industrial park," Escobar said. "That's why we put provisions in the ordinance that deal with those type of nuisances or potential nuisances that we would have for the neighboring business."
Escobar said there are additional guidelines in the ordinance that were approved and reviewed by the city's police department.
He said there are additional costs that the city will receive per license. With those additional costs, he said additional police officers could be hired, if needed.
At a Thursday, Jan. 18 meeting, council members are expected to approve and establish a regulatory license fee for commercial cannabis operations consistent with the city's municipal code.
