trance gate along North Avenue to welcome students back to campus. A select few students had been on campus during the school year, but California's purple (widespread) tier sta- tus that blanketed the Central Valley along with much of the state forced most schools into distance learning via video.
It was the same situation at OCHS, where the majority of students returned to the cam- pus to resume on-campus learn- ing for the first time since early last year. Signs and the school's distinctive fire truck for rallies and events were on display to welcome back students.
At other region high schools, the return to on-cam- pus learning hasn't arrived for the most part. Sanger High School is in transition to a blended learning program, and at this time has just a few stu- dents on campus taking special classes. The Apaches' athletic program also busy on campus, with athletes in outdoor sports already cleared to play prac- ticing and preparing for com- petition.
At the high school's main entrance at the northwest cor- ner of Bethel and Indianola av- enues, staff members were on hand taking temperatures of a smaller number of students taking classes on campus. Still,

The Cutler-Orosi Unified School District is continuing dis- tance learning at this time and will weigh options at returning to in-class instruction when county COVID-19 restrictions ease.

active cases fell to just 99 in the past three weeks.
All told, Tulare Coun- ty's positive percentage was listed at 5.1 percent in the March 2 report, which is almost a 2 per- cent drop for the week. If the declines continue to hold for another week, the county should be able to improve to red tier status for the first time in nearly a year.
The county also has showed a steady in- crease in vaccinations administered to its residents. The March 2 online report showed 50,345 people had been given at least one shot; an increase of more than 12,000 since the previous week's figures.
An important figure to reach is 7 per 100,000 people when it comes to daily positive tests for the virus. If the region gets below these num- bers, it will allow prep sports such as football to hold games (no crowds, players must be tested). Many Valley schools are mapping out revised and reduced schedules with games scheduled to be
COVID-19 update
As of the most recent update on Tuesday, March 2, there had been 95,677 confirmed cases (7 percent positive rate of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) out of 786,634 tests in Fresno County, with 1,451 deaths and 198 hospitalizations.
Among Mid Valley Times cities in the county through March 2 (Fresno County's new dashboard surveillance website continues to undergo upgrades), the Sanger region has the most total overall positive cases with 5,721 (4,200 in the city proper) and 50 deaths according to the FCDPH website. Through the March 2 update, Reedley (including immediate surrounding rural areas) is at 4,170 cases (3,400 in the city proper) and 60 deaths; Parlier was listed with 2,877 (2,400) cases with 33 deaths and Orange Cove had 1,500 cases and 12 deaths. Del Rey was at 300 cases while

to the red (substantial) tier is new COVID-19 positive cases per day per 100,000 population. It needs to drop to sev- en people; currently it stands at 14 in the lat- est release. Still, that's a huge drop from the 75.2 per 100,000 figure the county was at on Jan. 18.
Information on the county's COVID data surveillance page has be- gun adding city's death totals since the pan- demic started spreading in March 2020. Figures released by the county show that Reedley has 60 deaths through March 1, Sanger is at 50 deaths, Parlier has registered 33 deaths while Fowler is at 14 deaths and Orange Cove 12 deaths.
Hospitalizations al- so have dramatically dropped, under 200 in the latest Fresno Coun- ty figures. Much of that has been because of in- creased vaccinations in the region. On Feb. 27, more than 800 Sanger Unified School District

the bustle of activity has picked up considerably since the en- tire region was in a state of lockdown because of COVID.
Dinuba High continued to allow just a few students onto campus, as it also plans to even- tually develop a blended sched-
ule of distance and on-campus learning for students. In fact, the district just now is starting to open its on-campus learning for transitional kindergarten to sixth grade students. TK- 2nd opens on Thursday, March 2, while grades 3-6 begin on-
Fowler had 1,157 cases and 14 deaths through March 2. The region that includes Squaw Valley, Dunlap and Miramonte had 296 total cases on the new data surveillance website through March 2. The county announced that it will not list recoveries at this time to reallocate staff for new cases.
In Tulare County, there were 48,086 total confirmed cases (705 active, down 427 for the week) of COVID- 19 with 766 deaths and 62 hospitalized as of Tuesday, March 2. Breakdowns by cities/ regions through March 2 show 4,094 cases (99 in the past three weeks) in Dinuba, 1,429 in Orosi, 737 in Cutler, 248 in Traver, 58 in the rural area south of Reedley and 21 in the rural area southeast of Orange Cove.

While vaccine lines were relatively short on the first day of COVID-19 shots at Reedley College on Feb. 18 (due in large part to the appointment process), the increasing number of shots administered has played a big role in positive case numbers dropping in the Valley and state.
A total of 46,615 people (96.9 percent) in Tulare County were listed as recovered as of March 2.
employees received their first shots from United Health Centers during an event at the high school's West Cam- pus at Fowler and Jen- sen Avenues.
The situation also is rapidly improving in Tu- lare County, one of the hardest-hit areas in the Valley when the virus first slammed the re- gion a year ago. Active cases took a brief spike during last week, rising to 1,232 on Feb. 26 — but by March 2 had dropped
by 527 cases to 705. Hospitalizations also decreased by 16 patients, and also had a slight dip in intensive care pa- tients. Converselt, the recovery rate soared to by nearly 800, to 46, 615 — an impressive 96.9 percent rate of recovery. Deaths for the week climbed to 35, to 766. That represented about
1.6 percent.
