which supersedes the CMS 21 (R). The new PTP had simple aims: Applying the principles used in the Army Physical Training System, to develop JS for peak performance on the RFT Basic Training (BT) output tests, and subsequently meet the demands of Initial Trade Training. The process began by revisiting the RFT Entry (E) test model now assessed in week five, JS have time to understand the importance and requirement of military physical development. I also sought to take advantage of past experiences and observations receiving feedback from AFC(H) AAPTIs and Training Teams. This allowed the programme to capitalise on JS training adaptation, it was expressed longer distances for load carriages would be beneficial and even incorporate formative testing enabling us to highlight those JS at risk prior to testing, enabling us to implement intervention training. Additionally, the final PTP has implemented Team and Leadership sessions incorporated into combat scenarios, and Mental Resilience Training.

progress through their career post-injury. To successfully integrate a Junior Soldier back into the training pipeline takes a lot of planning from the top to the bottom of the chain of command. We must think about the estimated Return to Training of the individual, where their Platoon are in their training, ensure that we have Rehabilitated the injury and reconditioned to a point that they will not re-present to the medical centre. The confidence in their ability to reintegrate, and this is IF their progress goes to plan.
The Impact that Sgt Townsend and I have on injured JS Mental Resilience is monumental, we often use a BAWF type session to show and prove to the class that they are capable of much more than they think they are, even though limited with injuries. We’ve had some great feedback from this through our Patient Feedback Questionnaires.
Finally, it is not all work and no play – we often use Recreational Therapy as often as we can to keep JS enthused and the rehab process exciting. Anything from physical challenges to crab football, everyone enjoys a bit of light-hearted competition before getting back into it.
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT CO-ORDINATOR
Sgt (SI) S King RAPTC
As PD Co-ord, I collaborate with PS, JS and civilian contractors at the AFC(H). My main responsibility is the supervision of PS Physical Training (PT), which is delivered on weekly basis.
The PD Wing does not have a typical week. The job provides a dynamic, everchanging work life, however, my recent attention has been on ensuring the PS are prepared both physically and psychologically for any upcoming SCR & RFT (S). In addition, I have been closely
collaborating with AAPTIs to enhance their instructional abilities through CPD workshops. Additionally, those who aspire to join the RAPTC, we have focused on crucial aspects of the selection process, including interview techniques, verbal briefing strategies, knowledge of functional movement patterns and coping mechanisms.
I am an active contributor to the PS and JS LGBTQ+ support network at AFC Harrogate, something I am extremely enthusiastic about. This gives me the opportunity to be a source of guidance for anyone at the college struggling with their sexuality or gender.
In November 2023, I was successfully shortlisted as a finalist at the LGBTQ+ Defence Awards in the prestigious Outstanding Achiever of the Year category, for my efforts and dedication to supporting and educating LGBTQ+ JS and PS at AFC Harrogate. Despite not winning, I am extremely proud of my hard work, dedication, and effort - being nominated as a potential candidate for the award is a huge accomplishment itself.
I was presented with the responsibility to lead AFC Harrogate in the Army Sports Trophy Competition, and it was a challenging yet rewarding experience. Through hard work, dedication, and teamwork across the college training companies, we managed to secure victory and claim the Minor Units Trophy. Representing AFC Harrogate at the Army Sports Awards at RMAS, where we were presented with the trophy, a testament to the college’s collective effort and commitment to excellence.
