 CUOTC
Award of the Imperial Service Medal
The Imperial Service Medal is the medal of the Imperial Service Order instituted in 1902 by King Edward VII who wished to recognise more fully the services rendered to him by members of the civil service. The Imperial Service Medal is awarded on retirement to the administration and clerical staff of the civil service throughout the British Empire for those who have completed not less than 25 years of long and meritorious Service.
Malcolm Armon was the caretaker here at Cambridge University OTC for 30 years. Malcolm and his wife Kathy have been in the fabric of the OTC for a generation. It was not just a job for Malcolm – he cared deeply for the OTC; its people, the camp and most of all the security! Utterly reliable and dependable, and with a great sense of humour, he was a loyal servant to the OTC.
He took over from his father, so actually spent much of his younger years here at the Army Reserve Centre as did his son, now WO1 (RSM) Steve Armon, R ANGLIAN. Malcolm and Kathy were a massive part of life at CUOTC looking after the staff and the OCdts for all those years.
On Fri 3 Feb 17, Malcolm was presented
with the Imperial Service Medal at a lunch in his honour. All his family were invited with past and present members of CUOTC staff, and despite the plan to keep the day secret, Malcolm became suspicious and all was revealed. However, we were able to get his son, WO1 Steve Armon,
to present the medal to his father, which was
a fabulous family moment. WO1 Steve Armon

commented later; ‘This was a very proud moment for me, being able to present my father with the Imperial Service Medal in Service Dress’.
Malcolm, Kathy and their family are part of the rich tapestry of the OTC and part of the Light Blue Volunteers family. The CO and all the staff at the OTC wish them luck for the future.
Ed: Since this was written Malcolm Armon slipped gently from his fight against cancer at the Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge on the afternoon of Tuesday 15th August 2017. God Bless.
