RMAS Comdt’s Commendation awarded to OCdt Peter Martin
RMAS Comdt Commendations are awarded for Outstanding Service and recommended through the chain of command. They are open to military and civilian personnel and are awarded for outstanding service, to those who have done more than just
successful performance of his or her duties.
OCdt Peter Martin, worked to
complete an ambitious community
focused project called Operation
NORFOLK REMEMBERS (Op NR),
between June 2015 and July 2016.
The project’s main aim was to have
every First World War memorial in the county of Norfolk, visited and photographed by the people of Norfolk, on 9th July 2016, which marked the Centenary of the 2nd weekend of the Battle of the Somme.
OCdt Martin, researched and mapped every First World War memorial in the county of Norfolk, to create a searchable database and map, to allow the public to discover the location of their own nearest memorials, allowing them to then take part in the project and photograph their requisite memorial on 9th July 2016, for
the CUOTC team to collate. There was, to the best of the team’s knowledge, no one such database that mapped all of Norfolk’s memorials in one document, let alone a map and recent photographs of each one, so with one year to
“make it happen”, OCdt Martin set up his computer to start searching, gifted with his natural diligence, calm and analytical approach to problems and pedantic eye for detail.
He set his intelligent mind to work, methodically listing and geo-tagging each memorial as
he found it, after using his initiative to contact the holders of such information, including the Imperial War Museum and War Memorials Online, and other such respected institutions.
By July 2016, and the successful completion of Operation NORFOLK REMEMBERS, OCdt Martin had discovered, recorded and mapped in excess of 850 First World War memorials, including many of which had previously been undiscovered, and which without OCdt Martin’s research would have undoubtedly disappeared into obscurity.
