Remembrance Sunday at Huntingdon 2021
By Reverend (Sqn Ldr) Dawn Colley
It was a real privilege to be invited to preach at the Remembrance Sunday event at Huntingdon this year. It was good to see so many people returning after last year was disrupted due to COVID regulations. As usual the RAF Wyton Area Voluntary Band led the parade and provided the music in style. Wreaths were laid, prayers were done and those who had served and died were remembered.
Remembrance is always an important occasion, and we must always pay our respect to those who have gone before us. For me, this year was particularly meaningful as we were able to include members of our community who had struggled to find a service that they could attend and understand in the past.
Rev. Jan Smith, a Chaplain working with Deaf and Deafblind people in Ely Diocese, was able to come and sign for the members of the deaf community who attended. Following the service, the Station Warrant Officer and the Station Chaplain spoke with those who attended. They spoke about the difficulty in attending events due to lack of interpreters. They were appreciative that this year they had been able to fully participate.
Station Warrant Officer Mr Hopkins said: ‘It was absolutely fantastic to see members of the deaf community at the parade this year. Due to my experiences being so different to someone with impaired hearing or deaf, I had not realised how important having Rev Jan signing the service was. I was glad that I was able to speak with those that attended and gain an understanding of the difficulties of accessing a signed service. Going forward, this is something that we will always offer at the Huntingdon Remembrance Service.’
