come. The 4 metre high cases were bespoke to an octagonal room and nding a suitable loca- tion at Sandhurst was highly problematic to say the least. The task was complicated by the fact that the cases had deteriorated and needed conservation before installing in any of the pres- tige rooms.
To add to the uncertainty, the planning authori- ties debated over whether the cases were part of the building or just furniture – the decision was ultimately in uenced by the need to nd an acceptable building use to prevent further deterioration. Eventually, to make things sim- pler from RMAS’s point of view, only the eleven ‘stand-alone’ cases
would be accepted
and they would, at
Maj Kevin Forde’s
suggestion, be put in
Woolwich Hall. This
clinched the deal and
recess was selected
for the dismantling, transport, and re-assembly at Woolwich Hall. This proceeded smoothly thanks to Maj Keeley and the funding and sup- port from Durkan. The library has kindly donated some of their antiquarian books from Woolwich and these have gone into the cases.
In addition to the bookcases, the Collection has acquired the following:
Medals: The medals of Gillian Veronica Pat- tinson have been kindly given by her surviving daughters; Alexandra Fell, Penelope Robertson and Susan Robertson. Also Mr John Pattinson (a former Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery) kindly donated his pair. Both sets are a part of the Cap- per Family Medal Collection and have been con- verted from a long-term loan to a gift.
Course Books: During my PhD research I iden- ti ed that the collection did not have the follow- ing 19th Century course textbooks and so were purchased for the archives; ‘Textbook on Forti - cation’ (1894), ‘Notes on Military Surveying and Reconnaissance’ (1882) and Clery’s ‘Minor Tac- tics’ (1886). All were written by former members of staff.
Maps: During my research I identi ed a great quantity of catalogued 19th Century maps and plans which were unused in the library and were consequently transferred to the Collection by kind permission of Senior Librarian, Andrew
