2017 was another outstanding year for The Sandhurst Trust, The RMS Sandhurst charity.
The charity continued to support leadership activities around the Academy in the form of grants to Leadership & Resilience Training (LRT) - Formerly Adventurous Training and well over 500 cadets benefitted from cash payments to offset the cost of their expeditions. These grants are the backbone of our support to the cadets in training and we increased our financial com- mitment by some 60%. Several of the expedition reports are elsewhere in this edition and reflect the variety of activities undertaken and countries visited. The Trust also supported a small number of UOTC expeditions, bringing our influence to bear through our Reserve Forces members.
85 Sandhurst medals were presented to interna- tional cadets in the week of their commission. The medal, provided by the charity and presented by The Commandant, is a tangible reminder of a year at RMAS, and one which several countries have given permission for their officers to wear. The Trust has also sold well over a hundred medals to international alumni who commissioned before December 2016. One senior officer at the Acad- emy described the medal as ‘a game changer’.
The charity continued to earn the majority of its income through running events at RMAS. These

ranged from the high profile, such as the Con- federation of British Industries Dinner, to guided tours for a dozen people. The latest in our series of events featuring local Small and Medium Busi- ness leaders saw the Commandant and Baron- ess Ruby McGregor-Smith addressing a mixed audience of business leaders and officer cadets.
In total, the charity ran 168 events (up 36 from 2016) and created sufficient revenue to employ a specialist events manager. One especially poign- ant event was a visit from the French Napoleon III Society who came to lay a wreath at the statue of his son, Louis, The Prince Imperial, who was killed in action in South Africa in 1879. The Sand- hurst Collection curators trawled the archives for material pertaining to The Prince, much of which has never been seen outside of the Academy.
Finally, The Trust assisted the Big Learner Rally team when they visited Sandhurst. The rally sees a fleet of driving instructors and learners travel- ling some 3500 miles around the UK to raise money for Children in Need.
Our website is growing; one feature this year has been the establishment of the Leadership Library. Available to members, the online library has dozens of articles on leadership and current affairs – perfect for those tasked with penning a Subaltern’s essay.
