‘Hounds Will Meet – War Permitting’ said the notice advertising a meet of foxhounds near Salonika in WW1 Northern Greece. Throughout history, where the cavalry have gone, opportunities
for sport have been created.
Fortunately, in N Yorkshire, things are a little easier to get going. Following a sum- mer with some pleasant fishing on the Rivers Swale and Ure, the shooting season kicked off with an excellent days shooting on the moors at Warcop, where the CO and Maj Quicke were part of a team on a 91 1⁄2 brace grouse day. Capts Quicke, Alderman, and Lt’s Ellis and Riall were all able to enjoy days on the grouse before the season was called off due to low numbers.
The mess has also taken the chance to rejoin the Catterick and Feldom Training Area Shoots, after a hiatus of a few years, and has been very pleasantly surprised by both shoots. Ten officers from across the mess were able to enjoy days on both shoots, and have been stretched by some very challenging birds.
The highlight of the season was, without doubt, the day’s shooting hosted by Charlie (former Adj) and Lizzie Dunn, for the whole mess. With 24 officers and the RSM
(donning some particularly natty tweeds) shooting, it was no mean feat of organisa- tion to pull the day off. Eight members of the mess shot for the first time, with some pretty varying levels of coaching (and suc-
