The hill walking portion of the week, capa- bly led by Cpl Gargan, saw the squadron summit both Helvellyn and Blencathra twice over the 4 day rotation. From clag and sidewards rain, to sunshine and dai- sies, the tumultuous weather of the Lakes did not disappoint. Neither did it dampen the Legion’s spirits, as they concluded each trek with a fresh water swim, often with limited swimwear to hand...
Rock climbing was taken by Si Castle him- self, who skilfully introduced the Legion to belaying, knot tying and, surpris- ingly, speed climbing, the latter of which
involved racing your way up the wall as fast as possible. Naturally, there was plenty of excitement at the idea of becoming the fastest climber. The Legion’s two racing snakes were the Redcar raised Tpr Libby, and the Bournemouth bred Tpr Wilcox- Smith. Both putting in impressive shifts and record times, according to Si.
Keswick extreme’s Ghyll scrambling rounded off the activities nicely, provid- ing a morning’s worth of white water entertainment, cliff jumping, waterfall plunging and rock pool diving. Allowing Legionnaires to be released at lunchtime into Keswick to enjoy the local water- ing holes. Mr Digby however had other ideas. Dragging his group away from the

low hanging fruits of Spoons and instead trudging halfway up a mountain to see a circular rock formation. No doubt the troops were appreciative of his unearthed geological passion.
Finally the Legion Quiz. Hosted by enter- tainment leads Cpls’ Rae and McDonnell, sponsored by the Rusty Helmet, encapsu- lated the need for some time out of camp as a Squadron. Plenty of laughter had, and Taurus drunk, as the questions highlighted Si Castle’s dirtbag existence had not gone unnoticed by the soldiers of C SQN... It is safe to say he will not be taking his con- verted white camper van, near any local teaching establishments from now on!
