which can be seen on page 120 of “Thrapston a
Glimpse into the Past” compiled by Bill Warren,
copies of which are available to see in the
library. No other details were recorded so when
and where it was taken will probably remain a
mystery, unless one of my readers can help.
During World War 2, many vehicles were
requisitioned for use by the military. Others
were offered by owners for use both locally
and nationally. This photo (top right) is of a
converted horse-box ambulance with members
of St John Ambulance standing with it. From
left to right they are: Mrs Tiney, Mrs Knight,
Mr Allen and Mr Barrick. With another vehicle,
they are pictured outside the Workhouse at
the top of Cedar Drive (now offices of North
Northamptonshire Council).
My final picture is from about 100 years
ago looking along Halford Street towards
Grove Road with just one car parked and, in
all probability, very few others in town. My
knowledge of cars is non-existent, so I regret I
am unable to tell you what vehicle it is.
My grateful thanks to everyone who
comments on this series of articles. Often, they
have provoked memories of yesteryear leading
to family conversations about the rich heritage
our community holds. I trust this month is no
different.
