Sophie had been very thorough in following the boy from the town centre. He’d stopped to look in a bookshop window in the high street and was going inside when a woman grabbed his arm. He’d tried to get away, but when she began to argue with him he stood still. From his expression, Sophie deduced he didn’t want any contact with her, so she sidled up to them on the pretence of examining the shop window display. She told Alice the woman’s tone was emphatic. “I need you to help me, I can’t do this alone. No one will get hurt.”
‘Then the boy hissed: “You’re mental. Do you want me locked up again?’’
‘I missed the next bit but then she said: “Do you want to stay in that place for the rest of your life? It’s about time I had a decent home.’’
‘The boy turned and stared her in the face for a long time before saying: “Get lost, Mum. You’re on your own.’’
‘He walked away and the woman stared after him. Then she moved off and I wasn’t sure who to follow so I chose her. When she reached the bus terminal, I watched as she
