‘Oh, shut up, Lewis!’ replied a chorus of voices.
‘I’m deadly serious. I was in the attendance office getting a pass for the dentist’s and the head’s door was open. Two police officers stood at the window and the head introduced Killjoy to them. Then they sat down and the head closed the door. If you look in the school car park, you’ll see their car.’
With that, the students rushed to the window. Lewis was right. ‘So what’s going on?’ asked Simon. Cara and Olivia didn’t respond to the hilarious crazy suggestions or theories. By lunchtime, the entire school would hum with gossip. The most popular outcome for Miss Kilroy was to be taken to the Tower of London under Traitors’ Gate.

‘Please come in,’ said Mr Forrester, the headteacher. ‘The
police officers wish to speak to you. As this is a school matter, Miss Kilroy, the officers chose to come here instead of visiting you at home.’
She curiously eyed both officers and in a toneless voice said: ‘What is this about, officer?’
‘We understand your sister, Melanie Cooper, is living with you. Is that correct?’
Louisa Kilroy suddenly had a sickening sensation in her stomach and feared something terrible had happened to Melanie. ‘Not any longer. We had an argument and she left the apartment with her belongings to go elsewhere. Is my sister all right?’
‘Yes. She was found by a homeless organisation and taken to a residential care establishment.’
