‘My sister is lying, but I don’t know why. It was a mistake to allow her to stay with me. Thank you, Mr Forrester. I’ll be in touch.’
Reeling from shock and with her head held high, Louisa walked past classrooms and down staircases to the rear entrance that led outside to the car park. She dropped her belongings into the boot and sat in the front seat. Going home at this time of the day feels weird, she thought as she drove through the school gates. She imagined hundreds of pairs of eyes watching her as she sped away. Bitterly ashamed and a little scared, she opened her front door and dropped her handbag, briefcase, and coat on the floor. In the kitchen, she opened a cupboard, took out a bottle of wine, and poured herself a glass. Her mind was reeling and she couldn’t understand or process why her sister would contemplate making such a loathsome accusation to the police. It made little sense.
Gulping the last drop of wine, she went into the spare room and in her anger removed her sister’s belongings and began filling a refuse sack. She re-folded the bed and stared at the clothing piled underneath. ‘What are these doing here?’ Jakes clothes, she thought. They too went into a sack and she carried them into the kitchen.
Returning the spare room to its original state offered small comfort, but it was the beginning of the end. By now, her head was spinning; she couldn’t think straight. I can’t take this out on Jake; the poor lad has suffered enough being left alone to fend for himself. It’s his mother I should vent my anger towards. How could she do this?
