Her head was devoid of words except for shock and utter disbelief. What does he think about me? What has she told him? I’m going to have to figure out a way to contact him. If the police do come here, I’ll start with them and make a few enquiries.

On his way home from work, Steve Bates decided to visit Alice and cycled an extra two miles before he arrived at her bungalow. She greeted him warmly and he couldn’t apologise enough for his erratic behaviour three weeks

‘I hear your trip was worthwhile,’ he grinned.
‘Yes, it was, and I hope to return later this year. I’d
forgotten how wonderful the area was and being with Simone and Gregg brought back happy memories. How are Emily and Freddie?’
Steve pulled a face and said: ‘Emily’s all right, I suppose, and Freddie is crawling around and getting into mischief every day. He’ll be walking soon.’
‘I have a gift for her, so I think I’ll surprise her next week and call in unexpectedly. The most she can do is turn me away,’ laughed Alice. ‘What brings you here today?’
‘I have some new information, strictly between you and me. Kay told me about your visit to see Mr and Mrs Bannister and that you met Alan Cooper. His wife, Melanie, was taken to Shatford Lodge on the outskirts of Rauston. With her husband’s permission, the police visited
