confirmed that the jacket was sold that day. ‘We have three cameras. Would you care to see the footage?’
He nodded, and followed her into a back office. Watching the film, they viewed the sale but now needed to backtrack to find out who brought it in. ‘People bring bags of clothing in every day and some are left outside. We rarely get to speak,’ said the lady. Both Steve and Liam realised this might be a long job but a necessary one if they were to locate the boy.
Suddenly, an elderly man shuffled in. He was dishevelled and ranted: ‘I am the manager of this shop. What’s the meaning of this? Doreen, you are wanted out front.’ The woman left with a smile. Having listened to the officers, the man calmed down and was very helpful. ‘Are you talking about the racing car logo jacket?’
Steve nodded.
‘Well, that’s easy. I remember the day as if it was yesterday. You see, it was my birthday and I’d only just unlocked the shop door. A young boy followed me in and took a fancy to a dark green padded jacket. He wanted something warmer than the one he was wearing and suggested a swap. I must confess, officer, it was an odd request but no matter! It will still be on tape until this Saturday. Mind you, it was a good swap – chink, chink. We sold it today for eighteen pounds,’ he smirked.
‘Can we see the footage?’ asked Liam. ‘We might have to take it with us today, but we’ll return it later.’
