‘Shopping! No way! Something much better than that,’ grinned Alice. ‘But I’m not saying any more.’
When a taxi pulled up, Cara jumped in and rattled off questions. Alice refused to say a word until they entered the station and marched to the platform to board the London train.
‘Grandma. You can’t go in that door. It’s first class,’ Cara cried anxiously.
‘So it is and we have first-class tickets. Whoopee! All aboard!’ she cheered, lifting their overnight bags.
Searching the aisle for their seats, Cara grew curious. ‘It isn’t my birthday, so why the special trip?’
Alice intended to come clean about the boy and then had second thoughts. Kay and Pete might not take kindly to her opinion. Instead, she answered by saying:
‘As the older cousin, you have had to take a back seat for a long while. Family time has been taken up with Elise not talking, other problems after Robin’s death and the birth of little Freddie. It’s your time for extra-special treats. Anyway, I don’t see you as often as I used to, so our time together is precious.’
‘Well, I’m glad we can be together for two days because whilst Elise is away I have devised a plan I want to run by you,’ said Cara with a crafty smile. ‘When we get back from London, I want to walk around the town centre and hunt for this boy; call his bluff and follow him for a change. Will you come with me when I go?’
A sharp intake of breath almost made Alice choke. ‘You surprised me, Cara. I don’t know what to say.’
