RSYC TRUST – A REVIEW AND LOOKING TOWARDS 2020
Since the Trust was formed in 2015, we have introduced hundreds of young people to sailing and many of them have now embarked on the Royal Yachting Association Youth Sailing Schemes.
young carers were able to bring parents
and other family members to a day out by the water and watch the young people sail, enjoy the water activities including dinghy sailing, river trips, crab fishing. kayaking and raft-building. Many thanks to the volunteers and Gins staff for making these events memorable.
The highlight of our work with the Trust came in July when some of the young carers were presented to HRH Prince Michael of Kent on his visit to Gins.
We have also been involved in a Sport England “Energise Me” initiative together with the No Limits Charity in Southampton and Southampton Water Activities Centre
to encourage young people in the inner
city area to be involved in regular sailing activities and to eventually create a club in which they can continue sailing.
Our record in 2019 for young people involved in the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme is:
RYA Stage 1 Certificate – 35
RYA Stage 2 Certificate – 14
RYA Stage 3 Certificate – 10
RYA Stage 4 Certificate – 7
These are commendable results as those
with Stage 3 and above are now able to sail without supervision and show the determination of the children and skills of the instructors to achieve these results in a short time. Most of our beneficiaries are young carers from Hampshire.
The feedback we get from young carers is amazing. The effect that sailing a dinghy on their own has been amazing, by building
confidence, working as part of a team, a sense of accomplishment, building new skills, meeting other young people they can relate to, and providing respite from their carers duties and improving physical and emotional health. The benefit we can provide really helps.
Funding for the Trust comes from various sources. Much is from the club’s members via the Commodore’s Charity with charity events, donations and the 50:50 club.
Other funds are from local benefactors, Local Authority Grants and generous business foundations.
We held several very popular and successful Family Days at Gins in 2019 when
