A Coy in Somalia
In December 2021, A Company deployed on their first operations as Rangers. With two SOTUs deployed
to Op TANGHAM they delivered training to the Somali National Army (SNA). February 2022 saw A Company deploy to train the Mozambique Defence Armed Forces (FADM). May 22 saw four SP from A Company involved in the delivery of Joint Force Headquarters pre deployment training. Planning and delivering this four-week package enabled personnel from
JFHQ to successfully deploy to aid the extraction of UK citizens from Sudan.
In December 22, freshly back from Kenya on Ex ASKARI FALCON and being conceptually stretched on
Ex APOLLO FORGE, the company conducted rural-to-urban interface and anti-armour ambush training and coordinated urban strike ops alongside a partner force played by Birmingham and Southampton OTCs.
As the TG moved closer to Ex APOLLO SABRE, they conducted further training in deliberate detention operations alongside training on Ops, working at reach from a Task Group HQ coordinating with deployed Task Units, as well as arduous LFTT. The company’s continued exposure to inclement weather was excellent preparation for Ex APOLLO SABRE in early 2023, when the temperatures
routinely stayed below zero.
During the operations cycle, the TG
deployed alongside personnel from both 255 Sigs and 62 MI Coy. On Op TANGHAM, the team worked under the Somali National Army Training and Advisory Team (STAT) to develop the SNA’s leadership capabilities, enabling them to conduct counter VEO operations, create a joint UK/European Union Training Mission pathway
for SNA personnel, and develop a Somali / Ethiopian JOC to improve SNA planning, C2, and battlespace management.
The STAT additionally delivered Team Medic training, Route Protection/QRF Courses, the Combined Junior Leadership Course, and a Patrol Base Fundamentals course. Concurrently, the team formalised an exchange programme with the EUTM.

A Company look forward to handing over the mantle to
C Company
A Company personnel also supported Op INTERFLEX, where they developed and delivered a version of Platoon Commanders’ Battle Course to Ukrainian Army personnel, taking them from untrained to capable of leading in high-intensity combat operations
in ten weeks. The officers trained by Rangers have already been promoted to company command ahead of their peers, a testament to the quality of their training.
Concurrently, A Company deployed troops to the Hawaiian jungle on
Ex HAWGER to train alongside our partners in 3SFG.
As the operations cycle draws to
a close, A Company look forward
to handing over the mantle to C Company, who will no doubt continue 2 RANGER’s successful operational activity.
