Reflecting on the past 12 months at St Athan, it has been one of great challenge and great achievement. As always, the needs of the service have come first meaning, we had to
wish Sqn Ldr Gwynn Wallace farewell early as he moved to DMRC Stanford Hall resulting in the OC post being gapped. Talk about a baptism of fire.
The gapping could not have been more perfectly timed as the RRU hit one of its most dynamic periods since opening, with ongoing discussions regarding its future and the lease held by the Welsh Government. It’s not very often you get the opportunity to voice opinions to 1*/2* Commanders and ministers and be listened to; certainly, a level of discussion as an acting SSI I never thought I would find myself in and generated a few extra grey hairs.
True to form, the ongoing uncertainty has not dampened the team’s drive to deliver an excellent service to an ever evolving
and diversifying population, resulting in an outstanding grade for clinical delivery on our Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection. In short, it is simply humbling to have been involved in the management of this team over the course of the past 12 months. For those non ERIs amongst us, the world of CQC is a massive deal where we are held accountable to the same level as NHS hospitals, of which a grade of ‘outstanding’ is seldom issued! However, this was not my work, but the efforts of those that I have be fortunate enough to lead, I merely facilitated the opportunity.
On other news, we have been pushing the civil engagement front hosting several charity challenges, resulting in a world record in lifting a million kilos in 24 hours for Cystic Fibrosis, as well as promoting the RAPTC and its steps forward in training delivery at the Royal Welsh Show. All in all, an epic year.
