   Reserve PTI Basic and Advanced
The AAPTI course has evolved over the last 2 years from a model that aligned with the old Fit to Fight manuals into an updated format supported by academic research. As a result of this, it made logical sense to bring the Army Reserve courses in-line with the current AAPTI course. This ensures the key messages are the same for modern soldier conditioning across the Regular and Reserve Army.
This has been assisted with the closure of ASPT Grantham and centrally placing all PT courses at the ASPT Aldershot which has had some major infrastructure upgrades to support this. The Army Reserve Basic (AR (B)) course is designed with the same concept of the first 4 weeks of the AAPTI course, with a large focus on the components of fitness and earning the right to progress. It covers all Health and Safety (H&S) aspects and looks at group and individual session delivery from the APTS programme. The Army Reserve Advanced (AR (A)) course is based on the latter stages of the AAPTI course covering the revision of H&S, then the components of fitness related to military (green) PT. Emphasis of the AR (A) PTIs is aimed towards the green aspect of training, which includes: Tactical PT and Combat Agility. In addition, the Reserve PES has been included which consists of RFT (E), RFT (BT), RFT (S) Interim and the SCR.
PTI pre-learning package
Due to the evolution of the PTI courses over the last 24 months, student inval identified a desire for some pre-learning material. Therefore, Sgt (SI) Atherton was tasked to design a pre-learning package as a mandatory prerequisite for anyone aspiring to attend the AAPTI and AR (B) courses.
The content of the PLP include:
• General PTI Knowledge
• Terminology
• Movement Competency / Foundational • Basic Anatomy
• Words of Command • Resistance Training
The content is in line with THOR and uses differing methods and media of learning, creating a user friendly and fun learning environment. Feedback from the first AR (B) course held at the ASPT showed a positive response and students clarified that the PLP provided valuable information to prepare them for the PTI course.
ASPT G6 upgrade
There has been a significant upgrade of the G6 equipment with the ASPT and such upgrades are: the purchase of 6 Prowise interactive touchscreen TVs have allowed gym floors to become classrooms. The screens can fully access DLE course content allowing simultaneous theory and practical lessons to take place. In addition, 15 Instructor iPads have been purchased to reduce paper traffic by the way of excessive printing of student lesson plans and resources. They also have the capacity to operate coaching apps to further enhance the training environment by giving direct feedback on movement patterns. In addition, 50 Laptops have been purchased and are available for students, so they can freely access the course content and resources located on the DLE. Finally, the ASPT has had a complete re-fit of projectors in all conference rooms including laser projectors in the Lab and BCR. This has also included new standalone wi-fi enabled computer terminals in all classrooms which again allows our instructors to access the DLE from any classroom/ conference room on camp. Due to the closure of ASPT Grantham and consequently the uptake in student numbers there has been two new classrooms created, one to the side of Fox Balcony and the Officers coffee room which both have the same wi-fi capability.
In closing, undoubtedly the PTI courses will continue to evolve over time as “The only thing that is constant in life is change” and if change ensures the finest instructors transfer fully prepared into the RAPTC then so be it.
