The Commando Conditioning Course (The Beat Up)
The Commando Conditioning Course (CCC) is a Pre-Course run by the Royal Engineers (RE) for any rank or cap badge interested in working with 3 Cdo Brigade. The CCC is 5 weeks long and covers all aspects of Commando Training. This includes navigation, military skills, Physical Development (PD) and instilling the Commando Ethos. Students will then progress on to the All Arms Commando Course (AACC) if successful.
Change
For all who may have completed the CCC or more commonly known as “The Beat Up’’, the course has been historically known as a “Thrashing”. Continuous development and science has progressed the course for the better. The days of getting “flanked” every morning for not looking the right way have gone. The PD throughout the course is progressive, specific, arduous and wet (very wet). There is a mix of strength, conditioning, cardio, green PT, bottom field (Assault Course on steroids) and swimming within the physical training programme.
Zero to Hero
The timeline for all who wish to be a Commando is a long old slog. From start to finish, it is 18 Weeks. The first 5 Weeks will be the CCC held at RMB Chivenor. If successful, they will then be sponsored by 24 Cdo RE to attempt the Pre-Commando Physical Assessment (PCPA). This consists of a RM Basic Fitness Test, Battle Swim Test and complete the Bottom Field in under 5 mins. If successful, the individual will then progress on to the AACC for a further 13 weeks of progressive but arduous training.
End State
Once you have earnt that famous Green Beret you have it for life. The young sappers that turn up to 24 Cdo RE, normally have been
in the training environment for around 18 Months before they even get a room at RMB Chivenor. Passing the AACC is no mean feat and it is a formidable achievement for these soldiers.
The Future.
Once posted in to 24 Cdo RE the opportunity to deploy to all around the globe is a given. In the last year, the Unit has deployed to Norway, Caribbean, USA, Belize, Oman and Japan. 24 Cdo RE remains an extremely active unit and the draw for ambitious, robust and highly motivated individuals in un paralleled.
