Scientists are currently studying a number of options for protecting and saving Glaciers
(including huge fleece blankets and the production of artificial snow). These solutions
are considered to be highly effective in protecting Glaciers, and no less effective than
the Pope's prayers and wishes! Let's hope that all these efforts will help to preserve the
natural wonder that is Europe's largest, most beautiful, most enigmatic and most
powerful Glacier, the Aletsch Glacier, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
And if you decide to go and see the Glacier, do it - it will be one of the most powerful
experiences you will ever have. Of course, everyone will see and feel it differently, but
you will certainly feel something very powerful, and the Glacier might just open up its
secrets to you as it did to us, showing us its magnificent fairytale world under the ice.
You can even book a guided Glacier walk and step onto the ice to walk on the Glacier -
it will be an incredible and unforgettable experience. Or you can simply watch and
contemplate the strength or fragility of nature in the face of climate change. You don't
have to make any special vows or take part in the prayer and mystical ritual on 31 July,
but just getting out there and looking at the Glacier will be your first step towards
realising the need to protect it for ourselves and for future generations!
PS: And as we noted earlier, we are willing to discuss the possibility of hiking there
together, with the local guide (we know two excellent guides), or by organising a hike
through the international club, if we feel your interest.
Another option would be to go there on holiday for several days! To do this, contact the
Aletsch Arena and ask for a guide, or join one of the guided hikes and ice walks offered
by the local office. Try to feel the Glacier - it will mark you for life. It will be an
unforgettable experience!
