As this Year of Dialogue among Civilizations shows, the United Nations

it is the “raison d'être” of our work. Without dialogue we have no means of
bringing peace, security, development, democracy, progress and human rights
to humankind across the globe. Dialogue is the critical medium between
conflict and cooperation. In any dispute while the parties are talking it suggests
they respect, value and understand each other's differences, and are open to
each other's point of view. As you are well aware in Geneva, dialogue is a basic
function not just of international diplomacy but of every society the world over.
Dialogue among the Civilizations is the new trademark of Geneva in the
network age.

Switzerland has a long distinguished history and enviable reputation for
playing a much-valued role in the field of international diplomacy. Its
membership of several regional and international organizations, its active
involvement in world affairs have enhanced its international prestige. I strongly
believe that in the future, Switzerland will have more opportunities to offer the
world this unique experience as a living model of a democratic society and
multicultural tolerance.
