                                to the United Nations

                                         STATEMENT
                                BY MR. VLADIMIR PETROVSKY
                       UNITED NATIONS UNDER-SECRETARY-GENERAL
DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE AT GENEVA
ON THE OCCASION OF UNVEILING A COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE
AT LA “SALLE DE LA RÉFORMATION”

                                        26 October 2001

Mr. President of the Organizational Committee,
               Excellencies,
Distinguished Representatives of la Ville de Genève et l'État de Genève,
               Ladies and Gentlemen,

I t is a great honour and pleasure for me to be with you today on

the occasion of unveiling a commemorative plaque at the place of

                          la “Salle de la Réformation”.
First of all, I should like to thank Mr. Roger Durant, President of the Ge-
neva Foundation and his staff for organizing this ceremony within the
framework of a large programme “Geneva, a place for peace”. What is im-
portant is that this programme, including many memorial events, devoted this
year to the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the attribution of the
first Nobel Prize for peace to Henry Dunant coincides with the recent an-
nouncement that the United Nations shared the Nobel Peace Prize with its
               leader, the Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
