Monsieur le Président,
Messieurs les Ambassadeurs,
Mesdames, Messieurs,

P ermettez-moi, Monsieur le Président, de vous remercier vivement
pour vos propos aimables et votre accueil chaleureux. J'aimerais
également vous remercier, ainsi que mon épouse, de nous avoir
invité à ce déjeuner, lequel nous a donné l'occasion d'évoquer en un tour
d'horizon les perspectives sur le plan de la politique internationale et d'aborder
d'autres questions, plus spécifiques relatives au rôle de la Suisse, aux objectifs
de l'ONU et au développement de ses activités à Genève.

The celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations and the
invaluable cooperation of the Swiss authorities in this matter are of the utmost
importance for us and I would like to express my deepest appreciation.

I believe it is our common objective to use this opportunity to promote the
role and activities of the United Nations and its specialized agencies, the
impressive number of which, six to be precise, are hosted by Switzerland.

I am particularly pleased to be here immediately after the visit of the
Secretary-General who, in exhaustive discussions, expressed his strong belief in
