EDITORIAL

I would have liked this last Newsletter of 2023 to be based on optimism, to show that we
can face adversity and think about the future.

But that was without taking into account the turbulence in the world...

On the bright side, however, we have texts from several of our members, and I'd like to
thank them. We still have the excellent subjects covered by our Evelina. Together with
Marithé, they produce the much-appreciated newsletters.

In my editorial, I included a tribute to certain people who are part of
my very personal, and therefore entirely subjective, pantheon. My
pantheon includes Hubert Reeves, who died recently. Here is an
example of his remarks, which resonate perfectly at the opening of
                                   COP28.

Hubert Reeves passed away at 3.15pm on Friday 13 October 2023.

He will remain immortal in our hearts, as will all his work. Listening to
him was a joy, everything became simple...

Editorial letter of 4 January 2020

               Paris, 4 January 2020.

What are we going to do with our future?

The recipe for our existence can be found in my book Poussières d'étoiles :

First, stars have to be made from the initial magma. Then these stars have to live out
their lives and release their harvest of atoms into space. Then these atoms have to
combine into molecules and dust. And these grains of dust have to accumulate into
               rocky planets...

Finally, we need to ensure that the chemical and biological evolution of the planet
continues. We know more or less how long each of these operations will take. If we add
them up, we arrive at a minimum of several billion years.

Is it any wonder that the universe is already fourteen billion years old? That's all it takes
to give birth to a being capable of consciousness ...

And now, we humans, with our knowledge of the past and our capacity for
consciousness, what are we going to do with our future?

               It starts in 2020!
