FRIENDS WITH
BENEFIT
New Zealand sees Indonesia as the most important partner in ASEAN, judging by the size of the
market, trade, and investment aspects. Indonesia itself is New Zealand's 11th trading partner. The
characteristics of trade between the two countries are complementary. New Zealand exports key
raw materials, while Indonesia exports manufactured goods. During the visit of Prime Minister John
Keys in 2016, both leaders had set two-way trade volume to reach NZD 4 billion or Rp. 40 trillion.
New Zealand is considered a small economy with over 5 million people. A trading country, whose
economy depends on international trade. In maintaining the market for its products, New Zealand has
several Free Trade Agreements with its partner countries. New Zealand's trade with Indonesia is under
the umbrella of the ASEAN Australia New Zealand Free Trade Agreements (AANZ FTA).
During the five years, there were numerous economic accomplishments that we can be proud of.
Firstly was our trade balance. In the third quarter of 2019, Indonesia underwent the first-ever trade
surplus with New Zealand. This achievement was historical as Indonesia’s trade had never surpassed
New Zealand since the opening of the diplomatic relationship in 1958.
Other monumental achievements and the pinnacle of my terms were the Pacific Exposition events.
The first in 2019 and the 2nd in 2021. Both events had served not only the economic objective but
included all aspects in culture, people-to-people stronger ties, and creating a new marketplace.
Pacific Expositions are hailed to be the most comprehensive exposition in the pacific participated by
almost all countries and territories in the Pacific. The First Expo had recorded a commitment of
transaction amounting to US$ 70 million, while the transactions in the Second event had skyrocketed
to US$ 104 million.
During the state visit of H.E. President Joko Widodo, I had also managed to hold the CEO Meeting on 19
March 2018. The meeting was indeed successful. Several commitments had been conveyed to the
President in the field of the dairy industry, education, transformers, commodities, etc. As many as 28
CEO attended the meeting. The meeting was preceded by a first-ever sales mission held in Auckland
on 16 March 2018 which recorded the transaction of US$ 16 million.
