ONE PACIFIC DESTINATION
MY VISION TO CONNECT THE DOTS
The duo behind 'One Pacific Destination' idea:
Arif Yahya - Minister of Tourism of Indonesia - & Tantowi Yahya
For many years, international cruises have roamed the world’s seas bringing millions of
vacationers, thousands of miles away from home, to their holiday paradises.
Before COVID-19, during the heyday of the industry, the so-called “shore excursion” was a major
part of tourism industry with an estimated market of US$ 29,4 billion a year carrying total
passengers of 28.5 million in 2018. This number is expected to increase by 5% per year until 2024.
Indonesia is well positioned to gain economic benefits from this tourism venture when One Pacific
Destination, a vision to economically integrate the eastern parts of Indonesia with the Pacific
region, is materialized.
In the concept, exotic provinces of Papua, West Papua, Maluku, North Maluku, North Sulawesi, and
Indonesia’s Melanesian province, Nusa Tenggara Timur (West Timor), will be added to the routes
of Pacific cruise ships on top of New Zealand, Australia, and countries in the Pacific.
The underwater experience in Bunaken, North Sulawesi and Raja Ampat, Papua, music city of
Ambon in Maluku, the Komodo Dragon in Nusa Tenggara Timur are waiting for holidaymakers
yearning for exotic and adventurous experiences.
Under the One Pacific Destination, tourists from around the globe will get to immerse in a full
Pacific experience.
The One Pacific Destination concept was introduced at the Tourism Forum during the 1st Pacific
Exposition in Auckland in 2019 to a warm welcome from many key stakeholders in the Pacific.
