OVER THE
HEDGE
Since the establishment of bilateral ties between Indonesia and New Zealand in 1958, the two -way trade value had
alwasys been in the favour of New Zealand. The Kiwis enjoyed quite a chunk of trade surplus because Indonesia
provides bigger market for its dairy and meat products. On the other hand, Indonesia major export products are food
waste, tobacco, pulp and electrical appliances.
However, in the third quarter of 2019 based on the data from New Zealand Statistics, Indonesia’s trade and services
volume have surpassed the New Zealand trade. This was the first-ever trade surplus experienced by Indonesia against
New Zealand. The efforts to get over the hedge through boosting Indonesia’s exports in the last few years had been
paid off. The new task now is how to maintain the sustainability of this venture.
