LOVE-STRICKEN KIWIS
ON GAMELAN
In 2017, I had the distinct honour and pleasure to award
certificates of appreciation to prominent New Zealand
artists and academicians, Dr. Alan Thomas and Associate
Prof. Jack Brody for their outstanding contribution in
promoting gamelan in New Zealand since 1974.
The certificates were signed by the then Coordinating
Minister for Human Development of Indonesia, Ms. Puan
Maharani, and was presented during the diplomatic
reception to commemorate Indonesia’s 72nd Independence
Anniversary at Te Papa Museum. At the ceremony, the late
Dr. Alan Thomas was represented by his spouse, Jennifer
Shannon whilst the late Associate Prof. Jack Body was
represented by Judith Exley.
I took the opportunity to extend the highest appreciation of Jennifer Shannon
the Government of Indonesia for their dedication in
introducing and promoting gamelan to New Zealanders.
Their valuable contribution has helped to elevate gamelan’s
prominence over the years including the inclusion of
gamelan study in the curriculum of New Zealand School of
Music in Victoria University of Wellington.
I take pride in knowing that gamelan has been featured
beyond cultural events and festivals in New Zealand. The
instrument was part of the 2013 feature film, The Hobbit:
The Desolation of Smaug directed by Sir Peter Jackson.
As someone with extensive musical background and
undying love for arts and culture, their examples have
further emphasized my believe that culture is an effective
diplomatic instrument to bridge differences and to
synchronize frequencies.
