Paro, the Robot Seal
Factories have used robots to build cars and
other machines for many years. Now, the science of
robotics has reached a new level. Robots have now
moved from factories into people’s homes.
Paro, for example, is a robot that looks like a
baby seal. Paro behaves like a real pet in many ways.
It responds to touch and the human voice. It also
makes sounds similar to an actual baby seal. Since
Paro first appeared in 2005, the robot has found a
place in nursing homes around the world. Nursing
1
homes have used dogs and cats in pet therapy for a
2
long time. However, it is not always possible to have Dr. Takanori Shibata with Paro, the robot seal
a live animal in a nursing home. Japanese scientist
Dr. Takanori Shibata designed Paro to replace real pets.
Paro has become very popular in some countries. For example, nursing homes in Denmark
have bought over a hundred Paro robots since 2008. A study found that the robot helped elderly
3
people. They felt calmer and talked more when they spent time with Paro.
Not everyone thinks that the use of robots such as Paro in nursing homes is a good idea.
Some psychologists have pointed out that relationships with robots are not real relationships.
4
They believe that robots such as Paro cannot replace human connections.
