The Future of Work
10:00 a.m.
Stuart: Hey, Bob. Are you coming to the lecture on the future of work?
Bob: Yes, but it doesn’t start until twelve, so I’m leaving around eleven.
Stuart: No, it was at twelve, but Professor Miller’s going on vacation tonight, so she
changed the schedule. The lecture begins at ten-thirty. Hurry up, or we’ll be late!
10:50 a.m.
Professor Miller: . . . so you see, in the future, companies are not going to pay people
to drive to a central building. With the money they save, they’re going
to be able to hire more qualified workers. And it probably isn’t going
to matter where you live. In fact, workers in different time zones are
1
going to be popular with companies.
Stuart: Why is that?
Professor Miller: Well, let’s take an example, Stuart. Imagine you’re a manager in the
United States. It’s late afternoon on Thursday. The financial year
2
finishes tomorrow, and you’re giving a presentation in the morning.
You need some new information, but everyone around you is going
home. You contact your researcher in Australia, and because of the time
difference, you have the information first thing the next morning . . .
1 time zone: one of 24 areas the world is divided into as measured from Greenwich, England
2 financial: having to do with money
