14.6  Transitive Phrasal Verbs: Separable and Inseparable

                              Transitive Phrasal Verbs
                                    Jack looked up the word.
                     Separable
                                    He looked the word up.
                                    He looked it up.
                                    ✓  Jill thought about the essay.
                                    ✓  She thought about it.
                     Inseparable
                                    ✗  Jill thought the essay about.
                                    ✗  She thought it about.


                      1. Most transitive phrasal verbs are separable.* The   I turned off the light.    I turned the light off.

                      3. Some transitive phrasal verbs are inseparable.* The   I ran into an old friend.

                      4. Be careful! When the direct object of an       ✓  I came across it while doing research.

                        go after the verb and the particle.
