5 Spelling Rules for Adverbs Ending in -ly
Adjective Adverb
1. Add -ly to the end of most adjectives. careful carefully
quiet quietly
serious seriously
2. Change the -y to -i and add -ly to adjectives that end easy easily
in a consonant + -y. happy happily
lucky luckily
3. Keep the -e and add -ly to some adjectives that nice nicely
end in -e. free freely
4. Drop the final -e and add -y to adjectives that end simple simply
with a consonant followed by -le. comfortable comfortably
5. Add -ally to most adjectives that end in -ic. basic basically
enthusiastic enthusiastically

Adverb
1. Add -er or -est to one-syllable adjectives tall taller tallest
and adverbs. fast faster fastest
2. Add -r or -st to adjectives that end in -e. nice nicer nicest
3. Change the -y to -i and add -er or -est to easy easier easiest
two-syllable adjectives and adverbs that happy happier the happiest
end in -y.
4. Double the final consonant and add big bigger biggest
-er or -est to one-syllable adjectives or hot hotter hottest
adverbs that end in a consonant + a
vowel + a consonant (CVC).
