an important job in Guatemala today?
Angelica: When I was growing up, you almost never heard Maya languages on the radio or
TV. Some Maya languages were dying. Then, community stations started presenting
shows in Maya languages. They help keep the
languages and the culture alive.
Interviewer: Now, let’s go back to when you got the job.
Why did the radio station choose you?
Angelica: I was teaching my local language, Tzuthil.
Oh, and I was playing traditional music in a
band.
Interviewer: Were they looking for a musician, then?
Angelica: No, not exactly. They were trying to find
someone to present a show about Maya
music. I was waiting for an opportunity like
that.
Interviewer: Is the survival of Maya languages still in danger?
Angelica: Yes, but community radio stations help.
They encourage people to preserve Maya
languages and culture.
