Sangomas of
Southern Africa
Sangomas are traditional healers of southern Africa. They use
plants, songs, and dances to help people who are sick. Many people in
southern Africa prefer traditional healers to modern medicine. Women,
for example, may see a sangoma instead of a doctor when their babies
are born. Often, however, modern medicine and traditional medicine
work together. Using one kind of medicine doesn’t mean ignoring the
other kind.
A sangoma’s goal is to make his or her patient feel better. To help
1
their patients, sangomas perform different ceremonies. In one
ceremony, the sangoma throws shells and animal bones on
the ground. The shells and bones form a pattern. The
pattern helps the sangoma understand the patient.
Other methods of helping patients include special
drinks, drumming, and singing.
Scientists are studying the methods used by
sangomas. They hope to learn new ways to keep
people healthy.
