The Peel P50, continued from page 51
The two-seater Trident was the deluxe model, following the earlier car, a simpler car, the smallest road going car
in the world. Measuring just under 4.5 feet in length the original P 50 could be put in any sized parking space. (
Even a Frenchman could park it!)
Just as prophets are never appreciated in their own countries, the P 50, which became a success of sorts on the
mainland, was greeted by a limited audience with appreciation for its fuel sipping and space saving merits,
while those who lived on the Isle of Man were less convinced by the first car ever produced on the island. Peel
made fewer than 50 of the original P 50s and only 80 Tridents, before ceasing production in 1966. It was, as it
should have been, a brief but shining four years of motoring invention. Peel went back to boats and other fibre
glass manufacturing before closing its doors in 1974.
2023 Drum Roll -- t he P50 is back!
Now, after a decade in development, an almost breathless press release has announced the following: " This is our
homage to the iconic P50, the P50 Mk1 Saloon ; are our cars all meticulously hand crafted by our team of craftsmen,
who have produced parts for vintage Rolls Royces & Bentleys.
The P50?s original design has been reengineered. Blending 60s style with modern reliability, we?ve painstakingly
reproduced hundreds of original P50 parts and components."
The new editions of the P 50 may be purchased as either fully operating vehicles or as kit cars for home assembly.
The only difference between men and boys ( women and girls) is the price of their toys. Advertising copy below.
