MEETING WITH CHILDREN APPROACH
Child Consultant Process Step
1. Receive written referral from family mediator.
Conversation with family mediator about the case and comments about PRS
Engagement with each parent and arrange initial meeting
2. Meet each parent separately
• Consent form and confidentiality
• Short interview with parent
• Genogram
• Temperament Scale
• What to say to children about meeting (plus hand out)
• Process of bringing children
• Inoculation
• Feedback and limitations

3a. Child Meeting with parent 1 present
• Initial child and parent meeting (5 mins)
• Child shown room
• Inoculation
Child Meetings without parent
• Assent form, explanation and diagram
• Warm up exercise
• Two Activities
After Child Meeting add notes to CYCS
3b. Child Meeting with parent 2 present
• Initial child and parent meeting (5 mins)
• Inoculation

• Warm up exercise

3c. Child Meeting
• Collect summary of what “I’ve learned from you”
• Collect child ideas on flip chart paper as a list of what can be shared and with who
• Check off final list
• Permission to photograph child work
4. Child Meetings notes write up
• Your file notes
• Complete a CYCS for each child
• Complete a CYRS for each child
• Note jurisdictional issues about admissibility of your file and subpoenas (child
views NOT your interpretation)
Parent Meeting
• Discussion with family mediator what detail to share and how
• Identify intersections with the parent narrative
• Use of the CYCS headings to share observations from the child meetings
